This is my first actual blog in several years. I look back to my old Xanga (for my own pride, or what’s left of it, please don’t visit it to save me from embarrassment) and I have several feelings regarding it. Mostly nostalgic as I reflect on my life from 2003-2007 but the main thing was how much I enjoyed the writing aspect of it. I always had something to say and with my demeanor at the time being more towards the timid, shy and less outwardly opinionated, I managed to gain an audience amongst my friends as I humored them with my first world problems. It was a fun exercise that saw its demise when I started dating seriously again.
While the fact does remain that I am back to being single, I think it’s important to note that this isn’t starting up again because of that. I recently got back into writing because of my buddy Brian Kronner’s site Grizzly Bomb. This site covers pop culture and other topics that we used to debate and discuss (or argue and yell depending on who you asked) around the lunch table. I recently had the opportunity to join the site as a writer and later as an administrator and editor and it honestly rejuvenated me. Maybe it was being at Comic-Con with the Geek Magazine peeps, partaking in a trip across the country with Kronner, or being on a yacht (seriously, super cool) but to be around this bubble of creativity and great people just brought back those feelings of writing. Soon, I started to think of ideas to do and even bounced a few off of my family and friends to figure out what would be cool to put down on paper or the internet.
So this is my first new project back: The Philippines. A while ago, I got a flip cam and took several videos of my trip with my whole family. I had the plan to edit them all together and post it. Naturally, when I got home, life got in the way and I couldn’t get around to it. I don’t want to have that excuse any more. I think the Philippines is a terrific place and I’m not saying that because I have country pride. I think my friends and whoever else that stumbles upon this page should see the good, the bad, and the fun of traveling here. There is so much to do and see and partake it that I feel the need to share it.
So here I sit with my iPhone, my MacBook, and my FlipCam ready to record the action. I will be editing as I go and hopefully I’ll capture some good material as I travel to Seattle first, then Tokyo, then finally arriving in Manila – all in a 24 hour time period. It’s going to be a bit nuts and I’ll be traveling with my Aunt and my little 5-year old cousin from Detroit to Tokyo then reacquainting ourselves with my parents for the final flight to the motherland. I will be editing along the way, battery permitting, so hopefully I’ll have something close to put together when we land.
So I embark on this trip with ambition on my mind, a camera in one hand, and a computer in the other hoping I can entertain a few of you along the way. This will be educational to see how this turns out. Wish me luck.
